Remembering Dear Mum…
Helen Weaver
Helen Beverly Weaver (née Bennett)
July 1,1927 ~ April 2, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our loving and devoted mother and friend to all those whose lives she touched, on April 2, 2023 @ 6pm…
Helen left us peacefully in her 96th year, with family around her, at Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos, BC. We wish to thank mum’s care team, especially Jocelyn for her loving attention and care.
Born in Seattle, Washington, USA on July 1, 1927, she witnessed incredible changes to her world during her life. She first worked as a telephone operator in New Westminster, BC and then married young and raised her family on a dairy/crop farm in East Delta, BC.
Predeceased by her parents, Viola and Russell Bennett, her brothers Charlie and Stanley and son-in-law, Richard Johnson. She is survived by her beloved children Albert (Doreen), carol (Joanie), Marion (Tim); grandchildren Christopher, Sean (Allison), Kelsey (Chris), Cody (Brooklyn), and great grandchildren Eveliina, Annika, Payton, Quinn, Onyx and Sage. She is also survived by her youngest brother Gordon (Ruth) and her former husband Raynard.
Helen lived a very full life as a loving mother, homemaker and farm wife. For over 30 years she was a devoted volunteer with the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop in Ladner, BC. Known for helping others in need, she handmade and donated many quilts for young mums and children of the Downtown Eastside through First United Mission Church in Vancouver, BC. She also had an amazing knack of knowing with one glance, what size clothes you wore, allowing her to send clothes she either found at the thrift shop or elsewhere, that would fit like a glove. Mum was indeed a seasoned professional shopper and loved being able to land the best price or negotiate one.
She loved living and working on the farm in East Delta where she always kept a huge vegetable garden and all kinds of flowers especially sweet peas, which were her passion. She also adored her beloved space at Birch Bay, USA. Helen also loved to cook and bake, and to share good food, friendship and fun at Sunday night dinners which were a weekly occurrence.
Most of all Helen loved her family and friends, instilling strong values that have served us all well. She kept her sharp wit and humour right to the end. We will remember sharing many laughs along with lots of fun times together. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts.
Who is remembered, lives! Toodaloo dear mum… until we meet again.
The family is held a private celebration of Helen’s life in Ladner, BC in April 2023.
Please, in lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Helen’s name to the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop in Ladner, BC. https://www.deltahospitalauxiliary.org/

Poem written by daughter, Marion
Our dearest mother Helen
Born in Seattle, Washington
On July 1, 1927
Ironically … on Canada’s Day of Celebration
At a very young age
You helped support your family
Homemaking was your destiny
Not too mention your specialty
From a telephone operator
to becoming a farmers wife
For you that was greater
And a much better life
After Giving birth to your son
Giving birth was no longer an option
But you were not done
As 2 girls came up for adoption
Your hard work was ongoing
Each and every day
Never complaining
Or wanting to stray
While not just being a Mother
Other chores were expected
That you did like no other
And never rejected
To just name a few
Planting gardens, picking potatoes,
bailing hay, canning and growing tomatoes
cooking meals for the crew, milking cows when needed
Shopping for groceries
and much much more
And oh did I mention…
Shopping was never a CHORE!
Always entertaining
All your friends and family
Dinner parties were of plenty
Enjoyed by so many
Your years of volunteering
Standing on your feet
Was more than endearing
To all those you would meet
You did it all
without recognition
As your humble heart
Did it without conditions.
A nurse you should have been
Always there for the ill
Showing up at the scene
Gave you such a thrill
With flowers and gifts
You would arrive
To make them feel better
And much more alive
Your love to Shop
Was over the top
So thank god for the thrift store
So you could shop more
You shopped for hours
And had the patience of Job
Only to find
everyone else a new wardrobe
I will never forget
Your love for jeopardy
As you were all set
To answer so cleverly
Mom pls forgive me
For what I am about to mention
This poem can’t be written
Without mentioning your driving
You got behind the wheel
Always on a mission
And sometimes spoke to other drivers
Without filtration
The care aids you had
Loved you beyond measure
And all were so glad
For your great sense of humour
To name all your traits
Would be impossible to do
The word Selflessness comes to mind
For all who knew you
So this is our farewell mom
Toodaloo!
Who is remembered… lives! So will you live with us all forever mom!!

From beloved niece, Carol…
My Aunt Helen was a big part of my family my whole life. She was always so generous and helpful. We shared a trip to Hawaii, and Costa Rica. We also visited her place in Beachwood.
Plus she visited us at our home in Kamloops and get togethers at Mabel Lake. She shared her recipes with me and cooked us many delicious meals. We will deeply miss her and she will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Love you, Carol & Del
From carol, her daughter… remembering mum + one very special 10th birthday!
We knew it would be a good move for mum when she moved up to Osoyoos in the last year of her life… so she could be closer and have more regular interaction with family. The only downfall was that she was now even further away from us, being we live on a small gulf island, near Nanaimo.
She had endured so much isolation and loneliness during the pandemic including survive it. Mum would often tell me, while shaking her head, that she couldn’t believe she had lived so long. She was one amazing strong + resilient woman. Her own mum (gramma Bennett) had only lived to 69.
So, we didn’t get to see mum too much after she moved. Though i was so very grateful that i could visit with her in late March and i treasured every moment. It was indeed an honour to be by her side that week along with my dear sister, her youngest brother Gordie and his wife Ruth.
I have so many memories of dear mum… and i may post more here at some point. However, one fond recollection i have is what mum did for my 10th birthday… it was certainly a birthday i shall never forget!
On that day, i remember her saying in the morning before we headed off for school:
“Make sure you come home as soon as you can after school today because they will be a big surprise!”
I was sure to roar home as fast as i could that fantastic day…
love you so much mum, thank you—you rock!

Fond memories of your mum in East Delta
I have fond memories of you kids growing up. Sharing evening coffees with your mum, Helen and dad. I remember your dad’s Harvard plane and the auctions when it was sold and the dispersel of the dairy herd after your unfortunate barn fire.
Your mum attended at St. Stephens United Church through the years and I remember when she looked after communion for many years.
I visited her often at Augustine House. There were a few trips to Stanley Park when Ian was at his office in Vancouver.
Bye for now… Marge, Mrs. Payton x
Now more than ever… from daughter, Marion…
It is now more than ever I remember how absolutely selfless my mom was… her love language of gift giving was truly in the depth of her being and soul. Which lead to her constant need to shop…95% for others… always thinking of who she might, one day want to give what she bought to someone else. I miss her for this so deeply and truly have not appreciated it to the degree I do now.
I miss our visits so much, I miss her crazy sense of humour that I also came to appreciate more in her later years from all of the care givers that constantly commented on it and also loved her for it.
Mom’s love for family… was deeper than any of us know … she loved her get togethers with all of us. Her love for my kids and then her great granddaughters… Payton and Quinn was so beautiful. The fact that she got to hold Quinn in the last year before her passing was a memory I will never forget including the smile on her face… so so proud to have those precious visits.
Mom, I feel you with me every day and please know that you will be forever deeply in my heart… who is remembered, lives… with all those who knew you and loved you❣️

love from brother + sister-in-law, Gordie + Ruth…
One of mum’s favourite trees is the Dogwood… So, to honour and remember Helen, her brother Gordie and wife Ruth planted a beautiful Dogwood in their front yard, in Osoyoos. In late May, they invited mum’s daughter Marion to join them in spreading some of mum’s ashes around, nourishing the tree. As Gordie laid her ashes, Ruth read out a touching poem by Donna Ashworth titled, ‘When I Go’…

When I Go by Donna Ashworth When I go, don’t learn to live without me, just learn to live with my love, in a different way. And if you need to see me, close your eyes, or look in your shadow, when the sun shines, I’m there. Sit with me in the quiet and you will know, that I did not leave. There is no leaving when a soul is blended with another. When I go, don’t learn to live without me, just learn to look for me in the moments. I will be there. |
