the vancouver downtown eastside women's centre...
When i was 19, it was a good friend who introduced me to the downtown eastside of Vancouver—which opened up my eyes in a huge way.
Not long after, i lived and worked in the area on Hastings street between Gore and Main Streets from 1980 to 1985... i worked on the first staff of (newly renovated) Carnegie Centre for 4.5 years in many capacities, in the library, as info-clerk, door-person, secretary to the director and ran the weekly coffeehouse in the Carnegie Theatre. I loved working and living in an amazing community of people, who taught me a lot about looking after one another...
Since 1978, the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre has provided a safe space for women and children in the Downtown Eastside. We provide practical support, basic necessities and hot nutritious meals to over 500 women and children every day. We support women to make positive changes in their lives by connecting them to a continuum of services including outreach, advocacy, wellness, recreation, housing and skills development.
Donations are always greatly appreciated... which create safe space, basic needs, and positive change every day of the year. 90% of your donations go directly to services that support vulnerable women and their children. If you are not able to give in monetary funds, DEWC has an ongoing wish-list of much-needed items - perhaps you have something you no longer need to pass on...
