announcing my first chapbook of poetry…
Some good words for ‘the brilliant lightness of breath’ chapbook…
”Reading through your 31 days of daily haiku, I journeyed along with you, a deep meditation. Thank you!” —Anne M., artist
”A beautiful interplay of words and images tracing a short inner journey of letting go and letting be.
The pulse of pigment echoes the pulse of breath in the haiku themselves. The lines and spaces between them are equally significant. This is the work of a fine artist daring to probe the sometimes painful mystery of human existence.”
--Heather Menzies, author
“In this collection weaver contemplates breath. She proves herself a keen observer - certainly of her outer world and particularly of her inner world. Each haiku, each painting is a moment of insight, of truth. An aha! I breathe into weaver’s words, weaver’s brushstrokes. Inhale. Exhale.” —M.L., textile artist
“weaver’s words won’t let you down… nor will they stop knocking… upon the door of your heart… until you let them in and then they will give you reason to breathe.” —L.M., poet + seeker

the brilliant lightness of breath… 31 days of contemplation of haiku & brush
For 31 days between January 17 and February 16, 2024, (over a moon’s cycle) i wrote a haiku poem a day and created my first chapbook that includes my brushwork and watercolour art. I also created an art show of this work that is presently showing at our local library on Gabriola, March 1–April 29, 2024.
Why 31 days of contemplation with haiku & brush?
I needed to take one great big breath…
i wanted to lighten up.
The world has changed in so many ways, and i wondered if perhaps, others may have felt the same way. Since the onslaught and continuation of Covid-19, the many wars and chaos all around us globally, our world feels heavy and dark. I wanted to jump off that cliff of darkness and back into the light of who i truly am.
So what better way to lighten up than engage with one’s breath. Breath is life and breath is spirit. I chose to go deeper with my mindful breath meditation alongside my art practice.
Recently i’ve been exploring mark making and the brushwork practise of the Zen Enso; a circle that is drawn in one uninhibited brushstroke to express a moment when the mind is free, to allow the body to create… an emptying breath out in one fluid, expressive stroke.
I also love writing poetry and haiku poetry. I love what
Naomi Beth Wakan says about the form of haiku:
“…The world’s shortest form of poetry is sometimes called ‘one-breath poetry’, since their 17 syllables can be recited between an in-breath and an out-breath…”
So, it all seemed to align… The 31 days of contemplation is what is in the chapbook, the haiku that i wrote each day along with some of the brushwork and art i created. I hope you enjoy and may it help you feel a little bit lighter and remember to breathe!
brightest blessings + much love,
weaver x (((💜)))
PS… i wish to thank the Gabriola Library, Ranza + Kendra for this wonderful opportunity to share + show my work.
